Top 100 Songs

100-81

100. All Time Low - Sleeping In

Genre: Pop-rock

Youtube

All Time Low is a quintessential part of my high school experience and I'm glad to see them still kicking with earworms as catchy as ever. And the Hold It Against Me - Britney Spears reference? Come on.

99. DaBaby - ROCKSTAR (feat. Roddy Rich)

Genre: Rap

Youtube

DaBaby's flow here is much softer than it is in his other singles, along with a killer instrumental. It's no wonder this was a massive hit.

98. Meghan Trainor - Nice to Meet Ya (feat. Nicki Minaj)

Genre: Pop

Youtube

Meghan Thee Trainor comes back with a sexy, braggadocious bop in the vein of "Me Too", featuring a killer verse from Nicki.

97. Bully - Every Tradition

Genre: Indie Rock

Youtube

Bully delivers a bop rejecting expectations placed on her in life by friends, family and lovers.

96. DREAMCATCHER - BOCA

Genre: Pop-rock, K-pop

Youtube

When DREAMCATCHER first came onto the scene, I was immediately obsessed with their aesthetic and sound. I worried however they would quickly become reductive in their sound, so glad to see they are still finding fresh ways to incorporate rock elements into pop music, this time with a latin flare.

95. Chromeo - Clorox Wipe

Genre: Electronic, Pop

Youtube

Have you ever heard a love song comparing yourself to a surface disinfectant? No? Okay. In these trying times ™️, a clorox wipe sounds pretty sexy.

94. MARINA - Man's World

Genre: Pop

Youtube

Marina comes back with some of her best, most direct lyrics to date. They are unambiguous and effective, tackling climate change and the patriarchy.

93. Twin Peaks - What's The Matter (feat. Ohmme & V.V. Lightbody)

Genre: Indie-rock

Youtube

Twin Peaks delivered a groovy summer jam and it includes a solid flute performance! They also made it a point to record the song in complete social distance, recording their parts separately and working via mail, which is neat to advocate for.

92. CHUNG HA - Stay Tonight

Genre: K-pop, House

Youtube

Chung-Ha served!!! The song and video give nods to the ballroom scene in it's bouncy house beats and solid vogueing.

91. U.S. Girls - And Yet It Moves / Y Se Mueve

Genre: Indie-pop

Youtube

"They lie to us about yesterday so we don't understand tomorrow". That is what's repeated in spanish throughout the track. The song can be interpreted as how we as people are gaslit by media and our leaders. But maybe I'm reading too much into it.

90. Kylie Minogue - Supernova

Genre: Dancepop

Youtube

Kylie Minogue knows a thing or two about saving the gays. Supernova is a little peace of dancepop heaven. Love the vocoder effects.

89. Sufjan Stevens - Video Game

Genre: Folk, Synthpop

Youtube

A softrock grove about marching to the beat of your own drum. The song feels like a marriage of the futuristic Age of Adz sound and the acoustic folk rock of Carrie and Lowell.

88. of Montreal - Polyaneurism

Genre: Indie-Rock

Youtube

Kevin woes about some of the troubles he has in a polyamorous relationship, stemming from insecurity and emotional labor. Not for everyone folks! But this bop is.

87. Cut Copy - Cold Water

Genre: Synthpop, Electronic

Youtube

This single marked a departure from Cut Copy's electronic rock sound, going in a much quieter, ambient indie-tronic direction.

86. HAIM - Feel the Thunder

Genre: Rock

Youtube

There is something almost comical about this aggressive, Guns N Roses-esque number being penned for a kids movie soundtrack. The girls kill this animated vocal performance, and I am glad they take a not-so-serious song as an opportunity to experiment from their usual indie-pop sound.

85. Future Islands - For Sure

Genre: Synthpop, Indie-Rock

Youtube

Future Islands are no strangers to dramatic vocal performances, and Samuel Herring certainly carries the track with it. There is much less grove here than their singles off of 'Singles', but it's a sweet midtempo.

84. Little Dragon - Are You Feeling Sad? (feat. Kali Uchis)

Genre: R&B, House, Pop

Youtube

Kali Uchis delivers a slick vocal performance in this chill bop, giving her fans gentle nods to her Isolation era sound before her full venture into latin music.

83. Washed Out - Too Late

Genre: Chillwave

Youtube

Despite being quite mellow in the usual Washed Out fashion, the song actually employs Ernest Greene's grandest chorus to date, structured like contemporary pop with its laid back verses, further accentuating the chorus.

82. Rico Nasty - IPHONE

Genre: Hyperpop, PC Music

Youtube

An aesthetic and sonic departure for Rico Nasty, she employs Dylan Brady of 100 gecs fame to glitch and distort her voice to alien levels, complemented by softer r&b esque vocal runs. While I hope the full record employs some more traditional brazy Rico, this was an awesome change of pace.

81. Full Tac - Where's My Juul?? (feat. Lil Mariko)

Genre: Pop

Youtube

I have unapologetically and unironically stanned this masterpiece since December. And while the novelty has certainly worn, Lil Mariko's vocal performance puts the pop-metal subgenre girls to shame.

80-71

80. Beach Bunny - Dream Boy

Genre: Indie-Rock

Youtube

Despite seemingly centering the boy in the title, Dream Boy is assertive and oozes self-worth. The guitars are breezy and the voice is like honey, solid track.

79. Hello Seahorse! - Mujer

Genre: Electronic, Rock, Spanish

Youtube

Hello Seahorse! has refined their sound to an excellent blend of indietronica, ambient music, dancepop and post-rock, coupled with the lead singers captivating opera-esque vocals for a fully atmospheric experience. Cool lyrics too though optional for the listener to enjoy!

78. The Knocks - Get Happy (feat. Mat Zo)

Genre: Dance, Electronic

Youtube

When they said "Sometimes I get high", I felt that.

77. Seth Bogart - Boys Who Don't Wanna Be Boys

Genre: Punk-Rock, Surf-Rock

Youtube

Seth tackles gender norms imposed on kids in what feels like the thesis of half the queer studies PhDs I have met in my life. Love that.

76. The Chicks - Sleep at Night

Genre: Country

Youtube

An incredibly detailed accounting of infidelity, The Chicks take matches and burn the whole house down.

75. Bring Me The Horizon - Kingslayer (feat. BABYMETAL)

Genre: Metal, Trancecore

Youtube

BABYMETAL are without a doubt one of the most influential acts to come out of Japan, pioneering their unique blend of J-pop and Metalcore, and their influence shows in BMTH's latest LPs. It's cool to see them colab and they complement each other quite nicely.

74. Glass Animals - Heat Waves

Genre: Synthpop

Youtube

One of my favorite ballads from Glass Animals, while it entails a general longing, it hits extra hard with a global quarantine happening.

73. Sunmi - Pporappippam

Genre: K-pop, Synthpop

Youtube

On the surface the song may appear like a standard synthpop tune, but subtle details like the quiet flute in the post-chorus make it really stand out as a solid piece of pop music.

72. Waxahatchee - Fire

Genre: Folk, Rock

Youtube

One of my favorite things about this ballad is it's atypical song structure. It reads like longform poetry, built around a refrain. It almost sounds like one long chorus.

71. Everything Everything - Violent Sun

Genre: Indie-Rock

Youtube

I may have been slightly disappointed with their latest record, but Violent sun shows EE still know what they deliver well. Sweet melodies delivered over frantic calls of fear of the end of the world. It's less adventurous than their "Kemosabe's" and other cuts, but a groove nonetheless.

70. Porches - Do U Wanna

Genre: Synthpop, Rock

Youtube

Porches reminds me of an indie-rock robyn, fusing synthpop instrumentals with melancholic calls of emotional self-reflection and confessionals.

69. Mike WiLL Made-It, Nicki Minaj & YoungBoy Never Broke Again - What That Speed Bout!?

Genre: Rap, Trap

Youtube

Trap banger featuring a flawless verse from Nicki, and surprisingly great chemistry with YoungBoy NBA.

68. Deftones - Urantia

Genre: Metal, Shoegaze

Youtube

The track is a neat genre mesh with sections of soaring thrash-metal licks and shoegazy vocal performances in the verses. The type of jam I'd love to witness in an arena.

67. Bibio - Sleep on the Wing

Genre: Electronica, Folk

Youtube

Bibio describes this track in two aspects, the idea of waking to a loss and continuing life, and a more direct talk of escaping the city and finding peace in the countryside. I think its a good summation.

66. Sada Baby - Whole Lotta Choppas [Remix] (feat. Nicki Minaj)

Genre: Rap

Youtube

Yea... featuring Nicki Minaj is it's own genre.

65. Tierra Whack - Peppers and Onions

Genre: Rap

Youtube

This song has a really quirky instrumental incorporating whistles, tongue snaps and a slick percussion. Whack boasts self empowerment in a non-redundant way, she's super creative and one to watch.

64. Trash Talk & Kenny Beats - Something Wicked

Genre: Thrash, Punk

Youtube

Really awesome collaboration with Kenny Beats of Rico Nasty fame and Trash Talk, its a short aggressive thrash-punk crossover banger.

63. Bad Bunny - Yo Perreo Sola

Genre: Reggaetón

Youtube

A dancefloor empowerment anthem, the perreo is the dance phenomenon that accompanies reggaeton and other styles of caribbean dance music, and the song plays on a woman's perspective on this exchange, highlighting consent.

62. Saweetie - Tap In

Genre: Rap

Youtube

Really cool Too $hort sample on the instrumental, Saweetie wears her west coast influences on her sleeve in this instagram ready banger.

61. Arca - Time

Genre: Electronic, Synthpop

Youtube

I struggled on deciding on an Arca track here, especially not picking some of the bangers on Kick i, but I ultimately settled on this one for its euphoric instrumentation and dream pop sensibilities which I am a sucker for.

60-41

60. Carly Rae Jepsen - Summer Love

Genre: Pop, Disco

Youtube

This funky disco banger has a darker edge than we typically expect from a Carly Rae Jepsen track. It's quite sexy.

59. Kesha - Birthday Suit

Genre: Pop

Youtube

Birthday suit is such an adventurous sonic piece, with its quirky 8 bit samples, gliding ambient synths, it sounds like it was literally recorded in a busy arcade. Her delivery also balances awkward talk rap and gliding choruses that we love and know from Kesha.

58. Royal Blood - Trouble's Coming

Genre: Rock

Youtube

A groovy comeback track calls to the days of hard rock with a groovy stadium ready edge of the 70s and 80s, think AC/DC.

57. Alanis Morissette - Losing the Plot

Genre: Alternative

Youtube

With motherhood, Alanis has gained alot of perspective that drives her point of view in this project. `Losing` calls to exhaustion, post-partum, and frustration of being expected to super-woman. Sonically, i love the grand dramatic chorus on this one.

56. clipping. - '96 Neve Campbell (feat. Cam & China)

Genre: Rap

Youtube

Clipping's affinity for horror flicks shines here (the title referring to Neve Campbell in Scream), and my gay little heart loves the idea of reimagining the female leads of said films to be merciless queens who the monsters and murderers would themselves fear.

55. Hayley Williams - Sudden Desire

Genre: Alternative

Youtube

Sudden Desire makes me so glad Hayley put out this solo record. This song wouldn't sound out of place on 'The King of Limbs', with better vocals of course : )

54. King Princess - Ohio

Genre: Grunge, Rock

Youtube

As my friend Levi said, King Princess kind of just spins a roulette of popular music 90s trends to pursue and just goes with it. This song executes a fantastic anthemic grunge rock and roll number. That bridge? Are we kidding?

53. Flo Milli - May I

Genre: Rap

Youtube

I'm not not your bestie, not your sis, i'm not the one, I am that bitch. Oop.

52. Harry Styles - Golden

Genre: Pop, Rock

Youtube

Interestingly, Harry doesn't actually doesn't do much to sell this song in terms of his own vocal performance. However, it's a well produced tune with lucious vocal harmonies throughout, very grandiose. It reminds me of some of the better songs on How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful.

51. Bree Runway - LITTLE NOKIA

Genre: Rap, Hyperpop

Youtube

Nokia solidifies Bree's position as someone to watch next year. Such a cool blend of genre's here that I think are even better than some attempts by contemporaries such as Rico Nasty's Iphone.

50. Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs - Reducer

Genre: Metal

Youtube

It's heartwarming seeing freshman metal acts recall so closely to the classics and tribute with such integrity. This song sounds like it's right out of a Black Sabbath record, so thunderous.

49. Billie Eilish - Therefore I Am

Genre: Alternative

Youtube

Is this re-inventing the wheel? Not really. But billie's wheel has still got traction, why replace it.

48. Jessy Lanza - Face

Genre: Electropop

Youtube

Face is cool because it's literally just Jessie freely playing and flexing her production muscles, distorting, glitching, and chopping away to the point where what was actually recorded is but a distant memory.

47. Miley Cyrus - Midnight Sky

Genre: Synthpop

Youtube

Miley wears her reverence for the great Stevie Nicks here, so much so that she invited the prolific singer onto a cool remix. Miley's voice has changed alot over the years, its cool to see she has owned it and created a distinct lane for herself in the modern pop landscape.

46. CupcakKe - Elephant

Genre: Rap

Youtube

Cupcakke has put out a myriad of tracks over the past 2 years, clearly perfecting her pen and exploring new lanes outside of her traditional hyper sexual character. Elephant triumphs, a ferocious freestyle with excellent flows.

45. The Flaming Lips - You n Me Sellin' Weed

Genre: Alternative

Youtube

The story behind this track is wild, and honestly don't know how much of it is true. But sonically its a lovely shoegaze-lite ballad taking a rootsy approach to an 11, to the point where there is a cow/moose featured on the track.

44. Róisín Murphy - Murphy's Law

Genre: Disco

Youtube

Murphys law is a self-referential ode to her own life. The song is crafted meticulously, with a clear eye from someone who has the utmost respect for the genre.

43. Run The Jewels - out of sight (feat. 2 Chainz)

Genre: Rap

Youtube

Insane, cartoonish production here (are those organs?) and no holds barred verses from all acts involved.

42. Destroyer - It Just Doesn't Happen

Genre: Synthpop

Youtube

Speaking of immaculate production, the synth chords here are so crisp, and Dan Bejar's reverbed vocal performance is still so powerful, not succumbing to being washed out as that effect can usually have.

41. Kali Uchis & Rico Nasty - aquí yo mando

Genre: Reggaeton, Alternative

Youtube

Aqui Yo Mando served as a great transition for fans of the columbian songstress, incorperating Latin flare in the production and primarily spanish lyrics, as well as tying in an alt-r&b vibe that enamoured many on her previous LP.

40-21

40. Cardi B - WAP (feat. Megan Thee Stallion)

Genre: Rap

Youtube

Such a deliciously sexual track, the controversy surrounding it was bizarre. People need to learn their history.

39. Tame Impala - Breathe Deeper

Genre: Alternative

Youtube

Tame Impala took a more introspective soft spoken approach on this record, both lyrically and instrumentally. It does overstay its welcome past 4 minutes or so but the meat is good.

38. Squid - Sludge

Genre: Rock

Youtube

Thematically this song comes at a good place with self-isolation themes. The quirky vocal performance sells the song well.

37. Aesop Rock - Jumping Coffin

Genre: Rap

Youtube

I have never really considered myself an Aesop Rock fan. While I get and respect that lyrically he choses interesting and smart vocabulary, his flow and delivery just sound too... white and nerdy. The beat here is killer and he actually delivers with confidence and personality on this one.

36. System Of A Down - Genocidal Humanoidz

Genre: Rock, Nu-metal

Youtube

It is SO GOOD to hear SOAD back with new material, the track was released alongside 'Protect the Land' to fundraise and raise awareness for Armenia.

35. J Balvin - Rojo

Genre: Reggaeton

Youtube

J Balvin continues to assert himself as one of the leading acts in Reggaeton, being able to tackle a variety of sounds, themes and creative visuals. Love the wonderful melodies here.

34. Disclosure & Fatoumata Diawara - Douha (Mali Mali)

Genre: Electronic

Youtube

A joyous ode to the country of Mali. Listen to it and feel happy!

33. chelmico - Eazy Breezy

Genre: J-pop, Hip-hop

Youtube

Anime openings continue to remain superior. This song hits like an upper, it's so hype.

32. Thundercat - Dragonball Durag

Genre: R&B, Soul

Youtube

Subtle, Funky, Soulful. All things that Thundercat is no stranger to, but this track is so slick, even for him. It's humorous, and something really only he can pull off.

31. Aminé - Compensating (feat. Young Thug)

Genre: Hip-hop, R&B, Rap

Youtube

Aminé stacked this track with chorus on chorus on chorus. Even the verses are addictive here.

30. Oneohtrix Point Never - No Nightmares

Genre: Electronic

Youtube

A natural ethereal extension to the sonic direction The Weeknd has taken in his latest record, it's cool to see the acts colaborate on each others records and play in each others soundscapes.

29. Jazmine Sullivan - Lost One

Genre: R&B

Youtube

What a stunning ballad. The instrumental is bare, melancholic, in stark contrast to her raspy, commanding tone. Jazmine's performance comes off raw and emotive, yet controlled and powerful.

28. Christine and the Queens - Je disparais dans tes bras

Genre: Electropop, French

Youtube

The instrumental on this one is so sick, its distorted and creepy. Christine is no slouch in her vocal performance as well.

27. Grimes - My Name is Dark (Art Mix)

Genre: Electronic

Youtube

The song is a cool flair of nu-metal engineering, heavy reverb, and cool chords. It's very emo LA gay.

26. Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande - Rain On Me

Genre: Dancepop

Youtube

Rain on Me is such a tacky 'pop diva' number that really only Gaga could pull off with such integrity.

25. Flume - The Difference (feat. Toro y Moi)

Genre: Electronic

Youtube

I dont have much to say about this song except that I really enjoy it, very ethereal.

24. Lido Pimienta - No Pude

Genre: Trip-hop, Spanish-Alternative

Youtube

‘No Pude’ sums up the love / hate relationship I have with Colombia. I hold Colombia close to my heart and my soul, but that loves turns into rage and shame as fast as a match takes to burn.”

23. Isaac Dunbar - scorton's creek

Genre: Alternative

Youtube

Isaac has a wonderful knack for story telling, especially as it pertains to queer narratives in non-cliche ways, while also not being ambiguous.

22. The 1975 - If You're Too Shy (Let Me Know)

Genre: Pop-rock, Synthpop, New Wave

Youtube

We love a powerful cam-girl moment. I especially love the horns section on this.

21. Declan McKenna - The Key To Life On Earth

Genre: Indie-rock, Pop

Youtube

We stan a class-conscious anthem. 'The thing is, these out-of-touch scrounging rich kids, Are living here for free!'

20-1

20. Playboi Carti - @ MEH

Genre: Rap

Youtube

@ me bro!

19. Yaeji - WAKING UP DOWN

Genre: House

Youtube

Hilariously monotone and endlously groovy. It's kind of the dance version of 'adulting'.

18. Dua Lipa - Hallucinate

Genre: Synthpop, Disco

Youtube

This song is so meticulously engineered it's insane. From sleek glossy lyrics, sick thumping 808 that seems lifted off Daft Punk's 'Homework', and heavenly vocal production. 'Pop perfection' is overused but when its right it's right.

17. Megan Thee Stallion - Girls in the Hood

Genre: Rap

Youtube

This song not taking off was a CRIME. Megan reclaims Eazy-E’s “Boyz-n-the-Hood” into a female perspective without losing any bite. Endlessly catchy riffs from the sample have been polished to a 2020 lens, and amazing quotable one-liners.

16. KennyHoopla - how will i rest in peace if i'm buried by a highway?//

Genre: Alternative, Rock

Youtube

A kaleidoscope of references and inspirations here, from Bloc Party to Joy Division, from New Wave to Metal, Kenny brings them all together to create his delightful alternative persona. Production is a little rough around the edges but the talent is undeniable.

15. ITZY - WANNABE

Genre: K-pop

Youtube

I'm a sucker for a pop song with a grand post chorus and there is no shortage here. It's the type of song that always feels like its ended too soon.

14. 100 gecs - stupid horse [remix] (feat. GFOTY & Count Baldor)

Genre: Hyperpop

Youtube

gecs continue to take all of my favorite 2005 youtube nightcore and mashup concepts and mash mash mash.

13. Chloe x Halle - Ungodly Hour

Genre: R&B

Youtube

Disclosure is a BEAST on this production. A sensual dreamy R&B beat on its surface, but listen closely and you hear trace glitches and reverbs and other quirks. Chloe X Halle ofcourse deliver some of the most heavenly harmonious vocals to be delivered by anyone.

12. Bombay Bicycle Club - I Can Hardly Speak

Genre: Alternative, Dreampop

Youtube

This song sounds right off MGMT's Time to Pretend EP and I love that for them.

11. Fiona Apple - I Want You To Love Me

Genre: Alternative, Rock

Youtube

Endlessly whimsical, imaginative and explorative, Fiona sets herself apart as a singer songwriter with her unending willingness to explore her voice. She is not caught up with sounding perfect. She simply emotes.

10. Real Estate - Paper Cup (feat. Sylvan Esso)

Genre: Disco, Alternative

Youtube

Wonderfully nostalgic, Real Estate once again finds a way to keep their sound fresh by incorporating trends in popular music but keeping the sound cohesive within their brand.

9. The Weeknd - After Hours

Genre: R&B, Electronic

Youtube

This song sounds like it can be translated into a blockbuster feature film. I was surprised to find this is not one of the OPN produced tracks as it's instrumental sounds like it could be a part of Replica or something. The many sections of the song are theatric and thrilling.

8. Rina Sawayama - XS

Genre: Electropop

Youtube

Clarence Clarity does NOT disappoint. His reverity for early 2000s britney spears bubblegum pop meets glitchy industrial edm SHINES here, and we will not forget Rina's fantastic delivery of the track. She too has shown an affinity for these influences, hence their frequent collaborations. She brings an eccentric genre-bending flair we see in Jpop as well.

7. Ho99o9 - Christopher Dorner

Genre: Hardcore Punk, Rap

Youtube

Ho99o9 remain criminally underrated in the bubbling genre of Horror-themed rap music. This track is a pure punk revivalist dream, with attitude levels that match greats like Bad Brains.

6. ZHU - Risky Business

Genre: Electronic, IDM

Youtube

I am generally not a huge fan of slow burner IDM tracks but ZHU really does manage to do this in a captivating way, their haunting unmistakeable vocals probably being the leading reason.

5. Perfume Genius - Jason

Genre: Alternative, Chamberpop

Youtube

Its wonderful that we continue to get wonderful unique narratives of MLM love stories in music from alternative acts, as they act unbound from requirements of commercial success and social acceptability. PG paints a story of a hookup with someone who identified as straight, and the emotional trauma inflicted on both of them. A very beautiful song and a very real perspective and scenario.

4. Porridge Radio - 7 Seconds

Genre: Rock, Alternative, Synthpop

Youtube

PR said Pop Song is their idea of a pop song but no honey... THIS is a pop song. Delightful from start to finish, the song continues to emotionally progress until it wonderfully climaxes at the bridge.

3. The Strokes - Brooklyn Bridge to Chorus

Genre: Synthpop, New Wave

Youtube

The Strokes have had a surprisingly lowkey year when they put out imo their best record in years. Julian pulls wonderfully from the pop treasuretrobe that is 80s music. Similarities can be found to New Order and other New Wave acts. And considering thats like my favorite kind of music, it's no surprise I love it so much.

2. Jessie Ware - Adore You

Genre: Progressive House, Ambient

Youtube

Absolutely hypnotic, I am quite ashamed for being about a year late with this one. It's a sound that suits the balladress quite well, calling to other fantastic house vocal divas in the UK such as Katy B. Jessie Ware is vulnerable, romantic, soft and comforting. You can safely listen for hours and not realize.

1. Charli XCX - claws

Genre: Hyperpop

Youtube

Honestly I have a mean Charli XCX bias. It was decided on release that this would be my number 1 track and fortunately it has held up! There is actually quite some insight into the songs repetitiveness. Often artists try to express their affinity for someone with overrought metaphors and ideas, but in reality love is quite simple. Sometimes, you just really like someone and thats the best way to express it. In that way it reminds me of Carly Rae's I Really Like You. Coupled with fantastic production by 50 Gecs (Dylan Brady), the song is an explosion of Euphoria.
